A few years later it was updated with flared trousers and afro hairstyles as The Omega Man starring Charlton Heston’s hairy chest and clenched teeth. Now the sci fi classic is being given a third life—it’s a tri-make—with Will Smith as government virologist Robert Neville, in what is certainly the loudest version of the story ever committed to celluloid..." The film chronicles the events leading up to the night in 1967 when Howard Kaylan met Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles.

“It's an absolutely true story,” Kaylan recounts. “It was our first trip to London, and we met Graham Nash, Donovan, the Stones, and the Beatles-who played us Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band before it was released-all on the same night! I wound up eating dinner with Hendrix at 4 a.m...!”

...and therein lies the tale.

Also... "The Golden Compass, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, is the latest trilogy-in-the-making to grace theatres. Based on a series of books called His Dark Materials by British author and atheist Philip Pullman the film comes to audiences riding a wave of controversy. Although The Golden Compass won the Carnegie Medal for children's literature and by public vote, (by readers from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia), the title of “best children's book of the past 70 years,” several schools have banned the book (including some in Canada) because of a perceived anti-religion bias. I haven’t read the books, but based on the movie the plot appears to be nothing more than a simple adventure story in which good battles evil..." CANADIANS LOOKING FOR ACTION THIS SEASON

The Hunt Is On For Canada’s Ultimate Action Fan – with a

$10,000 reward

Scoring some action is a priority for over half of Canadians this holiday season – on-screen action, that is. According to a recent Panasonic poll, 54% want to feel the need for speed by watching an action movie during the holidays. And it’s no surprise more men than women are looking for an action fix. But which movies pack the best action punch? Leading Canadian film critics share their picks to settle in with on a cold night with a warm mug of eggnog.

Indiana Jones vs. John McClane

Movie experts, including Canada AM’s Richard Crouse, CBC’s Jelena Adzic and National Post’s Chris Knight were charged with the difficult task of narrowing down a list of their top five action movie picks – and from there, the public cast their vote. What movie came out on top? The 1981 classic that launched the Indiana Jones legacy, Raiders of the Lost Ark won out for best action. Die Hard (1988) was on its tail, and The Matrix (1999), Rocky (1976) and Scarface (1983) all scored high to round out the top five list for on-screen movie action.

"Action movies are so popular because they appeal to our in-bred notions of good and evil; right and wrong,” says Richard Crouse, film critic for CTV’s Canada AM. “The plots are generally simple, there's a bad person and there's a good person and after some back and forth the good person is going to come out on top. The hero may be bloodied and bruised, but they're inevitably going to win, and I think that appeals to the innate goodness in us all."

And just how do Canucks get their action fix? Forty-eight per cent like to curl up on the couch with a snack, while 23% prefer to dim the lights and crank the volume to get into the mood.  Socializing is important – 25% enjoy getting together with friends to share the thrill of action, and we’re starting to go high-def, with 19% saying they prefer their action in high definition.

Calling all action enthusiasts!

Movie aficionados have a chance to show their passion for action starting tomorrow, as Panasonic launches the hunt for Canada’s ultimate action fan! The reward? A $10,000 action lover’s dream: a 50-inch VIERA high-definition plasma television and home audio system to screen their favourite action scenes, plus a trip to the TELUS Whistler World Cup in February 2008 to catch all the action up close. During their stay, the winner and a guest will attend the World Cup Gala and have a chance to ski or snowboard at the renowned Whistler Blackcomb Mountain. Panasonic Canada is the Official Consumer Electronics Sponsor of Alpine Canada Alpin.

To enter, entrants visit www.panasonicactionfan.ca and upload a video, up to one minute in length, showcasing why they should be crowned the ultimate action fan. The contest runs from December 1st, 2007 to January 7th, 2008 and is open to residents of Canada, excluding Quebec. Read more... click here!
