Who do you call when giant earthworms are eating subway trains, a 60-foot bumblebee is sucking up the city’s electricity and a gigantic squid is munching ferry boats? The Monster Warriors, of course. This new 26-episode YTV Original Canadian series, a live-action/3-D animation hybrid, premieres in Vortex Saturday, March 18 at 10:30 a.m. with repeats Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. Richard appears in the last two episodes of the series as the mysterious Mr. Plant.

In the premiere episode, Giant Spider Invasion, Capital City is threatened by giant 25-foot spiders. The Monster Warriors suffer a few close calls, but when they spot an old monster movie poster in a video store window, they believe they’ve found their first solid lead towards solving the mystery and stopping the spiders from destroying the city.

“Featuring an all-Canadian cast, Monster Warriors is a made-in-Canada success story—and one with international appeal, thanks to Coneybeare Stories and the support and involvement of Jetix Europe,” said Bonita Siegel, Director, Original Productions, Corus Children’s Television. “The YTV Original Productions group is thrilled that kids in both Canada and Europe will be treated to this unique show beginning in spring 2006. Its mix of comic book styling, amazing CGI creatures and tongue-in-cheek humour make Monster Warriors our unique custom-made addition to the YTV programming lineup.”

As the Mom and Pop places disappear, replaced by fast food chains, it is refreshing to find a spot that not only offers good food but friendly atmosphere as well. Listen in to the Mike Stafford Show on Mojo Radio (640 in Toronto) this afternoon at 3:30 to hear Richard discussing the latest releases and the Canadian films at this Toronto International Film Festival.

July 25, 2005
For the fourth year in a row Richard will be hosting Telefilm
Canada’s Pitch This during the Toronto International Film Festival at Stop 33 at The Sutton Place Hotel at 955 Bay Street. This year’s event happens on September 13. PITCH THIS! is no ordinary pitch session; it's an event that elevates conventional pitches for both pitcher and audience.

In order to select pitchers, an open call is set up for projects that not only demonstrate creative and business potential, but aim to renew our ingrained expectations of what a pitch should be. Through a rigorous evaluation process, six projects are chosen from across Canada.

It’s goal is to foster a unique pitch event. Most pitches take place in a slick corner office; we've retired the office environment in favour of a stage and a live audience.

After all the pitches are done, the Toronto International Film Festival Group's International Industry Advisory Committee selects one winner from the competitors for the $10,000.00 award. This money will assist the winning filmmaker with the travel costs associated with attending major international festivals abroad, thereby setting the filmmaking process in motion.

May-July, 2005... The rich new media installation; "Painting the Myth, The Mystery of Tom Thomson" will be on exhibit at Design Exchange (234 Bay St) from May 27 - July 1, 2005 as part of digifest goes WILD! New Voices program.

Imagine if you could paint one of Tom Thomson's most famous works, while brushing the away the shroud of history from his story...

"Painting the Myth", a new system for interactive biography, allows participants to illustrate the life and times of artists, their work, their histories and their stories by moving through increasingly rich and detailed layers of their best known works.

This unique digital storytelling experience merges form and content into one engaging look at the story behind the canvas, the secrets inside the history, and the artist in each of us.

"Painting the Myth" is a rich new media installation that demonstrates unified narrative layering harmonized with the action of artistic painting that together, create a compelling experience.

Participants first encounter a blank canvas on an easel and a painter's brush. Behind the easel are a video camera and projector. As the participant paints with the painter's brush the video camera tracks the motion of the brush and in response to the brushing the projector projects brush strokes, which combine to paint the painting. Over time as the participant paints, stroke upon stroke a layered narrative is revealed in harmony with the completeness of the painting. (Richard supplies the voice of A.Y. Jackson.)

Visually, the painting is revealed with each brush stroke. This is synchronized to a layered audio narrative complete with sound effects and music. Experientially, the participant is literally painting the story.

"Painting The Myth" was developed at the Canadian Film Centre's Habitat New Media Lab
